Watching the Volvo Open Race has been quite fun! Finally sailing video, practically live, makes you feel a part of the racing.
I am getting ready to race on a 72 foot boat with Brian Thompson and Rich Sterns both pro's, in the Rolex St Thomas Regatta next week. I have booked a spot on the boat through Safe Passage Sailing. My goal is to have cameras all over the boat and post daily video here, unless I get sidetracked after each race. So Check here next week and look for some exciting videos! I will be using VIO HD cameras. Mast mount and the stern rail mount, P5200 for a Canon HD video camera. I hope to have a prototype of the new Back Stay Mount using a GoPro camera. 3 people will be wearing microphones to help with sound. I use the Sennheiser G2 and G3 mics. I will also be testing a lower priced microphone by Sony...now that GoPro, Contour and VIO all have mic inputs finding a reasonable priced wireless mic has been a problem. So....if the Sony works, it only retails for around $100.00 then I could offer these with the cameras and mounts. The racing began In Oregon's famous Gorge on the Columbia River, known for windy conditions! Not so today. Only 6 races were completed. Due to the strong current, winds of 10 knots are needed to counteract this 4 knot current. Here is a video clip of St Mary's team practicing rounding a mark against the current. I just added a page for charter or deep sea fishing, you can see what the possible set up would look like. Also some video from a Charter Fishing boat off the coast of Florida. Today The US Women's International Match Racing team were joined by the Brits, Brazil, Germany, and I believe Denmark. This was a peek at the up coming OCR (Olympic Class Regatta). The Americans and Brits were definitely the strongest teams! One camera on the stern on one of the US boats today. We experimented with a "low cost" wireless microphone that I patched into a GoPro HD camera. The results were "low". Good video, poor sound. I have had great success with the Sennheiser wireless mics with the GoPro HD, (used in College Nationals) but they are more expensive, the lesson here, is you get what you pay for.
