My favorite Ken Read on Puma, ended up in 4th place with Groupama 2nd and Camper 3rd.  Puma was leading a one point in a tight race with Groupama, Camper and Telefonica when Puma caught a fishing net.   Then with a possible favored wind and current going more East looked like a good idea.... it didn't quit pan out.  If there's any consolation it makes us "club sailors" realize it doesn't just always happen to us!  Sanya finished 5th

          American skipper Dennis Conner suffered a traumatic defeat losing the America's Cup in 1983. The New York Yacht Club had held it for 132 years.  Conner and his crew aboard Liberty faced a technologically superior boat named Australia II, that featured an innovative winged keel.  In a best of 7 race series it came down to one final race. Liberty led for most of the race, but lost near the end of the race.  Depressed by the defeat, it took several months for Conner to recover.
 
          Six months later Conner mounted a comeback.  But, first he had to defeat 12 other teams to earn the right to be the challenger.  After a grueling elimination series Conner prevailed, and faced the Australians in the 1987 America's Cup.  Conner won in four straight, and became a national hero. ESPN covered the races live.
 
          This program relives this amazing comeback tale.  Dennis Conner talks about his experience on the 25th year Anniversary of his victory with Stars & Stripes.

I just signed on to the Rolex St Thomas Regatta.  I will be sailing with Safe Passages on a Andrews 72, "Safara".  Brian Thompson and Rich Stearns will be our pro's, and the rest of us will pull lines.  Three days of training and 3 days of racing.  Safe Passages takes care of all the details and we just show up and enjoy sailing the US Virgin Islands on a wonderful Yacht.  There are 3 spots left!

Of course I will be filming my adventure as well...just can't help myself!  Stay tuned.

Amory Ross on bord Puma suggests..."Like any decision of this magnitude there are going to be pros and cons. Other than turning our back to the fleet, the biggest argument against our new course is that we’ll likely sail quite a few more miles. But in the eyes of the leadership the fair current, better winds, and far fewer tacks we’ll need to get around Vietnam more than pay for those extra miles. Jono was saying that in the stretch of water we now avoid, he did 38 tacks in one night during the last race. That isn’t fast."
