Here are a couple of pics of our crew and Host Randee and Jim Hurst. More videos to come...still working on them!
Thanks to Jim and Randee Hurst of Safe Passage Sailing, we all had a great time sailing! Brian and Rich were very patient with us "beer can" racers teaching us the ropes of a large 72 foot yacht! Our fleet was put with a group of TP 52s and a couple of other very racy boats while the rest of us were cruising boats so we basically won the cruising division, or as Brian put it we won the "furniture division". I still am smiling as Brian handed me the helm while holding a good groove up wind, tacking and even rounding a mark until the jib blew out...not my fault a batten gave way and shreaded the upper part of the sail. Great fun!! You too can have this same adventure, see www.safepassagesailing.com
More video of this trip to come!! New back stay mount worked great!
Yesterday was full of excitement and enthusiasm, as we were about to test our skills...very please about the results!! Here are some high lights of the day!
Finally got the video put together. I don't envy you editors out there. I hope you enjoy this short clip.
It is absolutely beautiful here. Thanks to Safe Passage Sailing we have a yacht that will sail fast and also not wear us out. Our Pro's are Brian Thompson and Rich Stearns. A lot of great sailors taking advantage of this unique opportunity! We are sailing on Safara an Andrews 72 owned by Billy Baldwin.
Today we test our skills or earn them as we train on Safara a beautiful 72 foot Yacht! Two days of training then racing begins on Friday. Hope to have some video tonight. First trial of our new back stay mount!
Due to Airlines overbooking and then cancelling flights, I made it to Miami instead of St Thomas. When I opened the shades on my hotel room at the Miami International Airport hotel all I could see was a concrete stairwell....quite a contrast to what was to be the view from my Villa in St Thomas. All is well and I'm on my way now! I will post some pictures tomorrow and perhaps some video of our training on the wonderful Yacht Safara sailing in the beautiful Virgin Islands.
Ready to try out our newest mount in St. Thomas! Here is a unedited pic of the prototype mount. I mounted it to a rod simulating a back stay. I will get some pics of it in action. Stay tuned!
Tomorrow the plane leaves at 6:00 am. I should have some pictures to show of beautiful Virgin Islands tomorrow evening. Looking forward to get to know some new people!
I discovered the average age of our crew is ruffly 55. One crew member is 80 years old! I'm not in that great of shape, this could be a lot of work. 72 foot yacht has a ton of sail area! DON'T LET THE SPINNAKER IN THE WATER!! Here we go!
Did I mention I was sailing on a 72 Foot Yacht from St Thomas in the Virgin Islands next week? Looks like the strongest chance of rain is in the first 2 to 3 days of next week! Could make for some creative video, the skies can get pretty awesome looking.
Training a crew for this size of boat and crew that has never sailed together before could be quite a story! The first few days, Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday are for training! Safe Passage Sailing is a company that prepares sailors for opportunities like this. I am anxious to see how we will perform! But we are in good hands!!
Captain Brian Thompson comes with a laundry list of Sailing records that he has broken over the years, the most recent was the Jules Verne Trophy for the fastest circumnavigation...45 days. This happened just a month ago! This guy loves sailing!
We will also be learning from Rich Sterns who also comes with a long list of accomplishments including Americas cup! These guys have their work cut out for them!! Stay tuned for my daily stories next week!
We can finally offer memory cards for our customers and at a great price!! One stop shop for all your on-board video needs!
